About the restaurant
Let us mention something about the name of the restaurant "BORGO Agnese": Borgo is an Italian word and has many meanings. All of these meanings are in some way related to the area where the restaurant and house are located. The 1st translation is a house or settlement on a hill. The 2nd means a borough (Pekařská Street was said to be in a borough of Brno until the 19th century). The 3rd translation is a very old part of a town or village. Therefore we hardly had any other choice when choosing the name of the restaurant ....The history of the area where the house is located.
The house in which the restaurant is located has been built in an area where the roots of the history of the municipality of Brno first began sometime in the 1st century during the settlement of the early Slavs. In the 13th century the area was called Na provaznickém vršku, and the "All Saints" church was located there. It was first mentioned in 1260 when townsman Rudolf presented the church to the Slavic white monks as a gift. They held patronage rights up until 1532. Later the church became the property of Brno. It was destroyed in 1645 during the siege of Brno Švéda. In our restaurant you have the chance to see part of the gothic presbytery from the 13th century, which is a historical landmark of the municipality of Brno. The settlement of Bruno Antiqua - Old Brno was established at the beginning of the 13th century at the foot of Špicberský hill. The name of the town is derived from the ancient Slavic word "brn" or "brnje", which means mire or marsh. It is quite probably derived from the then marshy surroundings of the banks of the Svratka River.
